Kathleen Lonsdale

Kathleen Lonsdale lived from 1903 through 1971.  As a child she was enrolled at Ilford Country High School for boys, to study science and math because the school for girls she attended did not have these courses.  She was a crystallographer, which is the science of the arrangement of atoms in solids.  She discovered the structure of benzene by the X-Ray method.  She is most famous for being the first woman to be elected in many elite campaigns.  For example, she was elected in the Fellow of the Royal Society, the first woman professor at University College London, and the first woman president of British Association for the Advancement of Science.

I chose to write about Lonsdale because she accomplished many things and did not let her sex stop her.  She was a very hard worker and well-rounded through the amount of sciences she studied.  While being a full-time mother, Lonsdale was also a profeser and worked on the synthesis of diamonds.  At the University she is still honored today for her many achievements.  Although it might have been tough to accomplish all of the titles she has recieved, she never gave up and never let the fact she was a female, and considered lower than men, bring her down.

When you think science what scientist comes to mind? What was this person contributions and why do you admire them?

When I think of science, Albert Einstein comes to my mind.  He is known as "the father of modern physics" and discovered many scientific theories that are still in use in our society today.  Einstein was also involved in the Manhattan Project, which admitted US to be the first only country to posses a nuclear weapon.

Two Goals For the Remainder of the Year

For the remainder of the year, I hope I will improve in many ways and I have set many goals for myself that I wish to accomplish.  First, I want to take better notes in class from the powerpoint and review them daily. First trimester, I tended to not take complete notes, which did not benefit me at all.  The second goal I have set for myself is to participate and completely understand the labs and experiments that we are doing.  I really enjoy doing labs but sometimes I don't actually think about why certain things happen and understand it completely.

E-Portfolio Reflection Question Set

1.  Why is this exhibit a good choice for placement in your e-portfolio?
My element superhero is a good choice to place in my e-portfolio because I believe I worked hard on it and learned many things from making it.  I enjoyed this the most because it was something different and I have never done anything like that in my years of science.  I found it quite exciting because it was creative and we could make our superhero look and act however we wanted based off of the element.

2.  What did you find most interesting about this exhibit activity and why?
Creating my superhero I found most interesting throughout the process.  I had never really dealt with anything that involved making heros or ever thought about it.  Also, i didn't even know it was possible to make an online superhero and be creative with its appearance.   I also found out my element, Silver, has the highest electrical conductivity of any element, which I thought was interesting.

3.  In what way(s) did you find this exhibit a challenge to complete?
I found that collecting the research of my element's boiling point and melting point more challenging than other parts.  I found a numerous number of different temperatures until I found the correct answers.

4.  If you were to do this activity again what changes would you make and why?
If I were to recreate my element superhero then I would probably make my poster more creative.  I could have added silver to it or showed a picture of the element silver.

5.  What change(s) in attitude or behavior helped you to meet the challenge?
I believe deciding to do mine before it was due and not procrastinate helped me significantly.  I planned not to do it until close to when it was due but realized I would regret procrastinating so I went ahead and did it early.

6.  What grade would you give yourself for these reflections, from “1” to “4”, where “4” is the best? (Refer to the E-Portfolio Reflection Rubric.) Give specific evidence explaining why you gave yourself that grade.
If I had to give myself a grade, I would most likely give myself a 3.  My answers were personal about my element superhero, but maybe they could be a little more personal.

If you were to be an element what would it be?

If I was an element I would be a very easily explosive element because i have a short temper and i am loud. I would probably be a metal element so people would know what i was . I would be very unique and very well-known to people.  Also i would be a metal because i can be flexible with my decisions with people.
